Auto Insurance through Mennonite Insurance
Auto insurance protects you financially if you have an accident. There are many components of coverage that can make up an auto policy. Some of these coverages are state-mandated and some are optional. Each component will have coverage limits beyond which the policy will not pay.
Auto insurance can have the following components:
1. Bodily Injury Liability - covers other people’s injury or death which you cause with your vehicle. It does not cover injuries to you or people on your policy. Mandatory in most states.
2. Property Damage Liability - covers damage you cause to someone else’s property with your vehicle. Mandatory in most states.
3. Uninsured and underinsured motorist - you are buying coverages #1 and #2 for the other driver, so you can recover if you are injured and the other driver has no or insufficient liability insurance. Optional in most states.
4. Medical Payments - covers medical expenses to you or your passengers caused by an accident regardless of fault. It can include accidents when you are a pedestrian or bicyclist. Optional in most states.
5. Comprehensive and Collision - covers property damage to your vehicle. These components will have a deductible. These coverages are not state mandated, but may be required by a lendor or leasing company.
6. Miscellaneous - depending on the insurance company, coverage can be offered for rental car reimbursement, towing, or other expenses you might incur as a result of an accident. These coverages are optional.
All states require liability insurance on the cars you drive. The state mandated minimum insurance is very low. An injured person’s damages can easily exhaust the minimum limits. Many people choose limits higher than the state minimums and some will purchase an umbrella policy that increases their auto (and home) liability limits by $1 million or more.
